GPT-7 Release Date: Astra 6.1, Terra 5.7 and What OpenAI Has Said
OpenAI has named no GPT-7 date. Its latest model is GPT-6.1 Sol. The dated releases, the tier names and what the versus predictions count.
versus Editorial · 17 October 2026
No GPT-7 release date has been announced: as of 17 October 2026, no OpenAI page we checked names a GPT-7, and OpenAI’s most capable model is GPT-6 Astra (3 September 2026) and its latest is GPT-6.1 Sol (29 September 2026). On versus, Will OpenAI release GPT-7 by 30 Jun 2027? showed Yes at 42p at 07:20 UK time (BST) on 17 October 2026, the market’s estimate of a 42% chance.
At the same time, Will OpenAI release Astra 6.1 or later to the public by 31 Dec? showed Yes at 93.5p and Will OpenAI’s GPT Terra reach version 5.7 by 30 Nov? showed Yes at 34.5p. This guide is for readers in Great Britain.
Astra, Sol, Terra and Luna: what the names mean
OpenAI brought in tier names with GPT-5.6 on 9 July 2026. Its launch post calls Sol the flagship, Terra a lower-cost model for everyday work and Luna the fastest and cheapest, and says each tier can move up on its own timetable. The GPT-6 guide puts Astra on top: GPT-6 Astra for the highest intelligence, GPT-6.1 Sol for a balance of speed, cost and intelligence, and GPT-6 Luna as the fastest. The full model catalogue lists no GPT-6 Terra. Its only Terra is GPT-5.6 Terra, which its model page likens to earlier GPT-5 mini models, and no OpenAI page we checked says whether a GPT-6 Terra will follow.
GPT-7 on OpenAI’s own pages
On 17 October 2026 we searched OpenAI’s news page, API changelog, model catalogue and deprecations page, its ChatGPT release notes and each GPT-6 launch post. None mentions GPT-7, an Astra numbered 6.1 or higher or a Terra after 5.6, and none gives a date for a future model. The closest is a safety update of 1 September 2026, which said larger training runs for future versions of Astra had been held back and that a large frontier run restarted on 28 August. It named no future model and no release date.
From GPT-5 to GPT-6.1 Sol: the dated record
Dates are from OpenAI’s own announcements, changelog and release notes.
- 7 August 2025: GPT-5, followed by point releases up to GPT-5.5 on 24 April 2026.
- 9 July 2026: the GPT-5.6 family of Sol, Terra and Luna.
- 3 September 2026: GPT-6 Astra, first for selected organisations, with wider ChatGPT and API access promised within days.
- 22 September 2026: GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna.
- 29 September 2026: GPT-6.1 Sol, an upgrade to GPT-6 Sol that a note on the Astra post calls OpenAI’s latest model.
- 7 October 2026: GPT-6 began rolling out in the Chat tab of ChatGPT, running on GPT-6 Sol for paid plans.
How long OpenAI’s steps have taken
This is arithmetic on past dates, not a schedule. GPT-4, dated 14 March 2023 on OpenAI’s GPT-4 page, came 877 days before GPT-5, and GPT-5 came 392 days before GPT-6 Astra. The GPT-7 cut-off falls 300 days after Astra, shorter than either gap. Sol and Luna each moved from 5.6 to 6 in 75 days, and Sol reached 6.1 seven days later. GPT-5.6 Terra has had no successor in 100 days, with the Terra cut-off at day 144, and GPT-6 Astra none in 44 days, with the Astra cut-off at day 119.
Three predictions, three name tests
GPT-7 by 30 June 2027
- Counts: a general-purpose OpenAI model with GPT and a version of 7 or higher in its name or ID, from any family, such as plain GPT-7, GPT-7 Sol, GPT-7.1 or GPT-8. The window opened on 4 September 2026.
- Does not count: anything still numbered 6, a name without an explicit 7 or above, and specialist lines (Codex, image, Daybreak and Cyber, Realtime voice, speech and transcription models) whatever their number.
Astra 6.1 by 31 December
- Counts: an OpenAI model with Astra in its name or ID and a version of 6.1 or more, such as a GPT-6.1 Astra, an Astra 6.5 or a GPT-7 Astra. The window opened at 16:45 UTC (17:45 BST) on 4 September 2026.
- Does not count: GPT-6 Astra in any form, whether a wider rollout, a cheaper offer, a Pro or Fast version or a new snapshot. That rules out GPT-6 Pro, which OpenAI’s help centre says runs on GPT-6 Astra, and Astra’s Ultrafast mode. Sol, Terra and Luna models and single-task lines fail too.
GPT Terra 5.7 by 30 November
- Counts: a model whose name or ID carries GPT, Terra and a version of at least 5.7, such as a GPT-5.7 Terra or GPT-6 Terra, even under Astra branding. The window opened on 14 August 2026.
- Does not count: GPT-5.6 Terra itself, any model whose name lacks Terra, which covers every GPT-6 model so far, and fine-tunes, modes or restricted variants of existing models, such as Ultrafast or Cyber versions.
All three share one access test: the model has to be released to the general public, not only to invited testers, and an open beta or a waitlist anyone can join is enough. OpenAI must say so publicly, or the model must really be usable and clearly labelled on its website; mislabelled pages and placeholders do not count. OpenAI’s own information decides, with reliable news reports as a cross-check. No model released since 14 August passes any of the three name tests.
When each could settle, in UK time
- Any day: the API changelog and ChatGPT release notes listed each GPT-6 model on launch day. A qualifying public model would settle its prediction Yes at 100p; a GPT-7 Terra by 30 November would count for Terra and GPT-7, and a GPT-7 Astra by 31 December for Astra and GPT-7.
- 30 November 2026, 11:59 pm Eastern Time: the Terra cut-off. With New York on standard time and the UK on GMT, that is 04:59 GMT on Tuesday 1 December, the listed end date. With no qualifying Terra, No settles at 100p.
- Thursday 31 December 2026: the Astra cut-off at 23:59 UTC, which is 23:59 GMT in the UK.
- 30 June 2027, 11:59 pm Eastern Time: the GPT-7 cut-off, 04:59 BST on 1 July 2027. The listed end date is earlier, 23:59 UTC on 30 June (00:59 BST on 1 July), so check both.
Before you trade
A price runs from 0p to 100p and is the market’s estimate of a chance: a winning contract settles at 100p and a losing one at 0p, so you can lose the whole amount you put into a position. versus adds a 2% transaction fee on top of the stake and shows it before you confirm, and while a market is open you can sell your position at the current price.

What is OpenAI’s newest model?
GPT-6.1 Sol, released on 29 September 2026, is the model OpenAI’s own posts point to as its latest. GPT-6 Astra, released on 3 September 2026, is the one OpenAI calls its most capable.
Is Astra 6.1 out?
No. The only Astra so far is GPT-6 Astra, and no OpenAI page checked on 17 October 2026 mentions an Astra 6.1.
Is there a GPT-6 Terra?
Not as of 17 October 2026. The only Terra in OpenAI’s model catalogue is GPT-5.6 Terra, released on 9 July 2026.
