Turner Prize 2026 Predictions: Barclay, Freije, Humeau and Sasraku
The Turner Prize 2026 shortlist, what each artist was nominated for, how the jury decides on 10 December and how a winner prediction on versus settles.
versus Editorial · 27 September 2026
Nobody knows yet who will win the Turner Prize 2026, because Tate says its jury decides on the day: the winner will be announced on 10 December 2026 at a ceremony at MIMA in Middlesbrough. On versus, at 08:09 UK time on 8 October 2026, the highest of the four prices was Tanoa Sasraku at 35p, a 35% chance, with Simeon Barclay at 33.5p.
One live prediction on versus, Who wins the Turner Prize?, asks who will win the Turner Prize 2026, with one answer for each shortlisted artist: Simeon Barclay, Kira Freije, Marguerite Humeau and Tanoa Sasraku. This guide covers the prize, the shortlist, how the winner is chosen, how the prediction settles and what a position can cost you.
The Short Answer
- One of four artists. Tate announced the Turner Prize 2026 shortlist on 23 April 2026: Simeon Barclay, Kira Freije, Marguerite Humeau and Tanoa Sasraku.
- The winner is due on 10 December 2026. Tate says the winner will be announced that day at a ceremony at MIMA in Middlesbrough.
- Tate settles it. The rules name official information from Tate and the Turner Prize as the source, and they also cover a shared prize and a year with no winner.
- You can lose the whole amount. A winning contract settles at 100p and a losing one at 0p, and a position that settles at 0p is lost in full.
What the Turner Prize Is
According to Tate, the Turner Prize was established in 1984 and is named after the painter J.M.W. Turner. It is awarded each year to a British artist for an outstanding exhibition or other presentation of their work, and it looks at recent work rather than a lifetime's achievement. For the prize, British can mean an artist working primarily in Britain or an artist born in Britain who works around the world.
Tate chooses a new jury every year, and for 2026 it is chaired by Alex Farquharson, Director of Tate Britain. The winner receives £25,000 and each of the other shortlisted artists receives £10,000, as Tate's press release of 25 September 2026 says.
The exhibition of the shortlisted artists' work is at MIMA, the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art at Teesside University, from 26 September 2026 to 29 March 2027. The winner will be announced there on 10 December 2026, while the exhibition is still running.
The 2026 Shortlist
This is what Tate says each of the four was nominated for.
Simeon Barclay
Nominated for his performance The Ruin, an hour-long spoken word piece commissioned by the Roberts Institute of Art and also presented at the ICA in London, The Hepworth Wakefield and New Art Exchange in Nottingham. It draws on his upbringing in Huddersfield and the industrial landscape of northern England.
Kira Freije
Nominated for her first major solo exhibition, Unspeak the Chorus, at The Hepworth Wakefield. Her sculptures use metal, fabric and found materials, with life-size figures built on bare metal frames and given cast stone faces.
Marguerite Humeau
Nominated for her solo exhibition Torches, presented at ARKEN Museum of Contemporary Art in Copenhagen and HAM Helsinki Art Museum. Her work looks at the formation of life, ancient human history and imagined future worlds, with sculptures set in a looped cycle of light and sound.
Tanoa Sasraku
Nominated for her solo exhibition Morale Patch at the ICA in London, an installation of sculptures and works on paper about recent political and military histories of oil.
How the Winner Is Chosen
The result is a jury decision. Tate says the jury decides the winner on the day of the announcement, through a series of discussions until it arrives at a consensus. So there is no earlier result to look up: until the announcement, the answer is not known.
The prize has not always gone to a single artist. In 2019 the prize went to all four shortlisted artists together, and in 2020 the exhibition was cancelled because of the coronavirus, with one-off bursaries for ten artists instead. Both cases matter for a prediction, which is why the rules deal with them.
How This Prediction Settles
Every market on versus names the source that settles it before you trade. For Who wins the Turner Prize?, the rules name official information from Tate and the Turner Prize. Each of the four artists is a separate answer with its own price between 0p and 100p, and that price is the market's estimate of how likely that artist is to win. When the winner is announced, a contract on that artist settles at 100p and contracts on the other three settle at 0p.
At 08:09 UK time on 8 October 2026 Kira Freije stood at 9.5p and Marguerite Humeau at 3p, so the four prices added up to 81p. Prices of separate answers do not have to add up to 100p.
At most one answer can be right, even in the unusual cases:
- A shared prize. If more than one of the listed artists shares the 2026 prize, the rules count only the one whose surname comes first in alphabetical order as the winner.
- No winner. The rules set a date in 2027 and say how the market settles if no winner has been declared by then.
Read that part of the rules before you open a position.
A Worked Example
Say one artist's answer trades at 25p. You put 500p into it, which buys 20 contracts. The 2% transaction fee is added on top, 10p, so 510p leaves your balance.
- If that artist wins: the 20 contracts settle at 100p each, 2,000p in total.
- If another artist wins: they settle at 0p, and the 510p is gone.
- If you sell first: say that artist's show gets mixed reviews at MIMA and the price falls to 15p. Selling the 20 contracts at 15p gives you 300p back, a loss, but a smaller one than a settlement at 0p.
The most this position could cost you was the 510p you saw before confirming. There is no leverage and no margin call.
What Can Move the Prices
Until the exhibition opened on 26 September, prices could only reflect what people knew about each nominated show. With the show running at MIMA, reviews, reactions from visitors and coverage in the run-up to the announcement can shift them.
None of that decides the result. The jury makes its decision on the day, and a price is only the market's estimate at a given moment, not a promise. An artist who is widely tipped can lose, and one with a low price can win.
Checks Before You Open a Position
- Read the rules first. They name Tate as the source and say what happens with a shared prize or no winner.
- Note the dates. The exhibition opened on 26 September 2026 and the winner is due to be announced on 10 December 2026. When markets close explains how deadlines work.
- Decide what you are prepared to lose in full. The stake and the 2% fee are shown before you confirm, and together they are the most the position can cost you. Treat that total as money you may not get back.
Before you trade
versus is licensed by the UK Gambling Commission under account 101143, which you can check on the Commission's public register. A 2% transaction fee is added on top of the stake and shown before you confirm, and while a market is open you can sell at the current price. Positions settle in ordinary money, not cryptocurrency, and customer money is held separately from company money.
Safer Play is built into the app: deposit limits, loss limits, reality checks, time out and self exclusion, alongside GAMSTOP. The safer play page explains each tool, how it works follows one position from opening to settlement, and how to verify market rules goes through the rules line by line. Only put in what you are comfortable losing. Prediction markets are entertainment with real money at stake, not a way to make money.
