Qwen Max 3.9 Release Date: What Alibaba Has Said and How It Settles
When could Qwen Max 3.9 arrive? What Alibaba has said about Qwen 4, what counts as a release and how the Qwen Max prediction on versus settles.
versus Editorial · 30 September 2026
Alibaba released Qwen3.8-Max on 3 August 2026, and people who follow AI models are asking what comes next: a Qwen Max 3.9, or a jump to Qwen 4. At the time of writing, on 8 October 2026, Alibaba's own model list shows no Qwen Max 3.9 or later, and Alibaba has said Qwen 4 is in training without giving a date. One live prediction on versus, When will Alibaba's Qwen Max reach version 3.9?, asks by when Alibaba will release a Qwen Max 3.9 or a later model. This guide covers what Alibaba has said, what counts as a release, how the prediction settles and what a position can cost you.
The Short Answer
- No Qwen Max 3.9 yet. Alibaba's latest flagship is Qwen3.8-Max, announced on 3 August 2026.
- Qwen 4 has no date. Alibaba said on 22 September 2026 that it is in training, and named no release date.
- Three deadlines. The answers are 31 August, 30 September and 31 October 2026. A release before a deadline makes every later answer right too.
- It has to be a Max model. A Qwen3.8-Max update, a Flash model or a Plus model does not count.
- You can lose the whole amount. A winning contract settles at 100p and a losing one at 0p.
What Alibaba Has Said So Far
Qwen is the family of AI models made by Alibaba. In its press release of 3 August 2026, Alibaba called Qwen3.8-Max the most powerful model in the Qwen series to date, with 2.4 trillion parameters, and said developers could use it through its Model Studio platform from that day. Alibaba had unveiled Qwen3.7-Max on 20 May 2026, about two and a half months earlier.
On 22 September 2026, at its annual Apsara Conference, Alibaba said in a press release that its next generation model, Qwen 4, is currently in training, with a roadmap for Qwen 4.5 and Qwen 5 at 5 to 10 trillion parameters. It gave no release date for any of them. Earlier release dates are history, not a schedule.
Alibaba's model documentation, last updated on 28 September 2026, points to qwen3.8-max for the strongest reasoning and lists no Qwen Max 3.9 or later. It also lists a version called qwen3.8-max-0902, which keeps the 3.8 name. Alibaba has published Qwen3.8-Flash-Next too, which its own model page calls an experimental preview of the design behind Qwen 4. That is a Flash model, not a Max model.
What Counts as a Release
The rules decide what counts, so read them before you open a position. In short:
- The name. It has to be the flagship of Alibaba's core Qwen Max line, with both "Qwen" and "Max" in its name. A new whole-number generation such as Qwen4-Max would count. A model without "Max" in its name, such as a Plus or Flash model, does not, and neither do specialised lines for vision, coding or other uses.
- The version. It has to be 3.9 or higher. Any Qwen3.8-Max release falls short, including a preview or a later stable, open-weight or dated version of it.
- Public access. The model has to be open to the general public. An open beta or a waitlist anyone can join counts. A closed beta or private access does not.
- Clear evidence. Alibaba has to announce the model as open to the public, or make it publicly usable and clearly label it on its official website. A labelling error or placeholder text does not count.
Qwen3.8-Max, open to developers on the day it was announced, is the kind of public release the rules describe, but at version 3.8 it falls short. A Qwen 4 release would count only if it is a Qwen Max model.
How This Prediction Settles
Every market on versus names the source that settles it before you trade. For When will Alibaba's Qwen Max reach version 3.9?, the rules name official information from Alibaba, with credible reporting as a cross check. Each date is a separate answer with its own price between 0p and 100p, which is the market's estimate of how likely a qualifying release by that date is. If a qualifying model is released in time, a contract on that answer settles at 100p. If not, it settles at 0p. The market page shows when the market closes.
At 08:09 UK time on 8 October 2026 the prediction priced the 31 October answer at 90p, a 90% chance, and the 31 August and 30 September answers, whose dates have passed, at 0.2p and 0.1p. That is the market's estimate, not a statement from Alibaba, which has given no date.
Because the answers are deadlines, a release before an early deadline makes every later answer right too. The 31 August and 30 September deadlines fall on or before the day of writing, which leaves 31 October as the answer still to play for. A release on 15 October 2026 would make only that answer right, and no qualifying release by 31 October would make none of them right. The prices do not have to add up to 100p.
A Worked Example
Say, purely as an illustration, that the 31 October answer trades at 25p. You put 500p into it, which buys 20 contracts. The 2% transaction fee is added on top, so it comes to 10p and 510p leaves your balance. The fee is shown before you confirm.
- If a qualifying Qwen Max model is publicly released in time: the 20 contracts settle at 100p each, 2,000p in total.
- If not: they settle at 0p, and the 510p is gone.
- If you change your mind first: while the market is open you can sell at the current price. If it has fallen to 10p, selling the 20 contracts gives you 200p back, a smaller loss than if they settled at 0p.
The most this position could cost you was the 510p you saw before confirming. There is no leverage and no margin call, so a market moving against you cannot leave you owing money.
What Can Move the Prices
Prices can react to the news: a release date for Qwen 4, a public preview or reports that a new Max model is being tested can shift them quickly. As the last deadline gets closer without a release, the price of that answer tends to fall. None of that decides the result: only a public release that meets the rules does. A price is the market's estimate at a given moment, not a promise. Alibaba has given no date for a release, so the fixed dates are the prediction's own: the 31 October answer and the close of the market at 03:59 UTC on 1 November 2026.
Checks Before You Open a Position
- Read the rules first. They say which model counts, what public access means and which source settles the market.
- Check which question it is. A Qwen3.8-Max update or a Flash model would not count.
- Note the deadlines. The answers are dates, and the market page shows when the market closes. When markets close explains how deadlines work.
- Decide what you are prepared to lose in full. The stake and the 2% fee are shown before you confirm, and together they are the most the position can cost you.
Where to Find This Prediction
versus is a prediction market app across politics, finance, sport, AI, crypto and entertainment. How it works follows one position from opening to settlement, and how to verify market rules goes through the rules line by line.
The Bottom Line
A Qwen Max 3.9 prediction comes down to one event: a public release of a Qwen Max model at version 3.9 or higher, as the rules define it, before each deadline. Alibaba has said Qwen 4 is in training but has named no date, and any position can settle at 0p, so only put in what you are comfortable losing. Prediction markets are entertainment with real money at stake, not a way to make money.

Frequently asked questions
When will Qwen Max 3.9 be released?
Alibaba has not said. As of 8 October 2026 its model documentation lists qwen3.8-max, announced on 3 August 2026, as its Max model and shows no Qwen Max 3.9 or later.
When will Qwen 4 be released?
Alibaba has not said. At its Apsara Conference on 22 September 2026 it announced that Qwen 4 is in training, with Qwen 4.5 and Qwen 5 on its roadmap, and it gave no release date for any of them.
What counts as a release on the versus prediction?
The model needs both Qwen and Max in its name and must be version 3.9 or higher. It must be open to the general public: an open beta or a waitlist anyone can join counts, private access does not. A Qwen4-Max would count, but a Qwen3.8-Max update or a Plus or Flash model would not.
What is the latest Qwen Max model?
The latest is Qwen3.8-Max, which Alibaba announced on 3 August 2026 as the most powerful model in the Qwen series to date. Its documentation also lists a later snapshot, qwen3.8-max-0902, which keeps the 3.8 name and so does not count.
