Nobel Peace Prize 2026 Winner: Navi Pillay and the Predictions
Navi Pillay won the Nobel Peace Prize 2026, announced on 9 October. Pillay was not among the 20 answers on the versus prediction, so none of them matches.
versus Editorial · 8 October 2026
Navanethem "Navi" Pillay won the Nobel Peace Prize 2026, according to the Norwegian Nobel Committee's announcement of 9 October 2026, and is the sole laureate. Pillay was not one of the 20 answers on the versus prediction "Who takes home the Nobel Peace Prize?", so none of them matches the result.
This guide was updated on 9 October 2026, after the announcement. It is for readers in Great Britain, and it is not advice.
What the Committee announced
The Norwegian Nobel Institute's press page scheduled the announcement for Friday 9 October 2026 at 11:00 CEST, which is 10:00 UK time, at a press conference in Oslo. The Institute's announcement page now carries the Committee's statement. The summary page on nobelprize.org lists one laureate, Pillay, with a prize share of 1/1, so the prize is not shared.
Why the Committee chose Navi Pillay
The Committee says the prize goes to a person who has led the way towards a more comprehensive global legal order. It adds that the laureate has been instrumental in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide are prosecuted. The Committee's citation is for efforts to promote peace and international law.
The statement says Pillay was born under apartheid in Durban, South Africa, became a lawyer and defended Nelson Mandela and others who stood up against apartheid. Among other roles, it lists service as a judge on the High Court in South Africa, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court, and as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. The full text is in the Committee's press release of 9 October 2026.
What it means for the two versus predictions
Two predictions are about this prize, and each has its own rules.
- Who takes home the Nobel Peace Prize? has 20 answers, each a person or an organisation, and no "someone else" answer. Its rules name the Committee's announcement as the source. Pillay is not on the list, so none of the 20 answers matches the result. The answer "ICJ" (the International Court of Justice) was on the list. The statement names Pillay as a judge at that court in one case, but the prize was awarded to Pillay, not to the court, so that answer does not match either. This article does not say how positions on it are settled.
- Will at least one person win the Nobel Peace Prize? turns on whether any laureate is a person rather than an organisation or another kind of body. Pillay is a person and the sole laureate, so the rules give the answer Yes. The prediction page shows it as settled.
What the prices showed at 09:59 UK time
At 09:59:37 UK time on 9 October 2026, just before the scheduled announcement, the 20 prices on the first prediction added up to 35.9p. The highest single price, 22.5p, was for one of the 18 individuals on the list. The answer "ICJ", the International Court of Justice, stood at 5.3p and UNRWA, a United Nations agency for Palestine refugees, at 2.3p. On the second prediction Yes stood at 71.5p and No at 28.5p. A price, from 0p to 100p, is the market's estimate of a chance at one moment, and prices of separate answers need not add up to 100p.
The prize went to a name that was not on the list at all. Nominations are secret, so any list of 20 names can miss the laureate.
How the prize is decided
According to nobelprize.org, the Committee has five members, appointed by the Norwegian parliament, the Storting. As a rule, it decides at its last meeting before the announcement. The statutes of the Nobel Foundation keep nominations private for at least 50 years, so a list of likely winners cannot be checked against the real list of nominees. The Institute's press release of 30 April 2026 counted 287 candidates, 208 individuals and 79 organisations, and the first versus prediction had 20 answers.
Dates that matter now
- Friday 9 October 2026, 10:00 UK time: the scheduled time of the announcement, in which the Committee named the laureate. Both predictions' rules refer to this announcement.
- Saturday 10 October 2026, 23:59:59 UTC (00:59:59 UK time on Sunday 11 October): the end date of the first prediction, as its rules give it. The announcement came before this date.
- 10 December 2026: the award ceremony in Oslo, the date the Institute gives in its press release of 30 April 2026. Neither prediction's rules mention the ceremony.
Before you trade
You can lose the whole amount you put into a position: a losing contract settles at 0p, and a price is only the market's estimate at a given moment, not a promise. Every prediction names the source that settles it before you trade, and for these two the rules name the Committee's announcement. A 2% transaction fee is added on top of the stake and shown before you confirm, and your loss can never exceed what you put in. versus is licensed by the UK Gambling Commission (account 101143, see its public register).
